Nursing home margins at lowest point since 1999

Jul 24, 2020
The Bottom Line

The lowest average margin for freestanding nursing homes in recent years was recorded in 2018, according to a new report from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC). The total average margin dropped to -0.3% in 2018, which is the first negative overall margin since 1999.

Nursing home margins have been on a year-to-year decline, although as 2018 is the most recent data available, we have yet to see COVID-19 will affect future margins.
